TEACHERS IN Suffolk made national news this week after a freedom of information request revealed that they had taken 10,000 hours off sick in 2010.

This total is the equivalent of 50 academic years of absence and is obviously worrying for parents of students in our Suffolk schools.

The high number of sick days are being blamed on stress caused by the pressure placed on teachers by inspections and league tables.

On Twitter Nick Garnett said he thought teachers need 'more teaching time'. I am inclined to agree with him.Teachers go into their profession because they want to educate young minds. Not because the want to be constantly critiqued and assessed.

I hope the new Government will change the education system so teachers are able to relax and do the job they love without any pressure.

Teachers need to get a grip. Kids aren't that scary if you know how to handle them. In my humble opinion teaching in Newmarket seems pretty good to me.
