Newmarket's recycling centre has been saved from closure following the intervention of Newmarket Open Door charity.

The facility in Depot Road was set to be shut down after July as Suffolk County Council revealed they could no longer afford the running costs.

Residents of Newmarket would then have to travel to either Cambridge or Mildenhall to dispose of their recycling.

However, the involvement of Newmarket Open Door will stop this from happening.

The centre will close its doors as a council-run site on July 31st 2011 and reopen as an Open Door service on August 22nd 2011.

The charity has also confirmed it will dispose of a full range of waste.
