Plans for a new Sainsbury's store in Newmarket have been thrown out by the town's council.

The proposal included a host of other amenities, including a cinema, retail shops, restaurants and 90 homes to be built on the George Lambton Playing Fields.

Replacement sports pitches would have been on the available ground near the Leisure Centre on Exning Road.

However, councillors have raised concerns that the plans could lead to a loss of community open space, see an increase in traffic as well as harm Newmarket's reputation as a rural and horseracing town.

As a result, they have rejected the application from Sainsbury's.

Tesco and Morrisons have both recently submitted plans to open brand news stores around the town, while Asda are also expected to make a proposal soon.

Forest Heath District Council are preparing to look at their applications soon.
