A huge development that will incorporate an Asda supermarket has been suggested for Newmarket's High Street.

The company behind the plans are the Unex Group, have proposed using the land that encompasses the Queensbury Lodge, the old swimming pool and the area that backs onto the Rowley Mile.

The development includes: a 40,000 square foot supermarket, 400 parking spaces, a bar, a restaurant, retail space and a hotel.

Bill Gredley, founder chairman of Unex, told the Cambridge Evening News: "With a following wind, we would hope to see that in two years' time it would all be up and running and people would be shopping and singing and dancing staying in bedrooms.

"We have got a tight programme. In two years' time you may see a different Newmarket."

A planning application is expected to be submitted within the next eight weeks.

It will be the second Asda store in the town, with the other one currently trading in the former unit once held by Netto near the George Lambton estate.
